Connecting at Uni
A lot of us start university expecting that we should take responsibility for managing our own lives and learning. The positive strength of this attitude is a strong sense of independence and resourcefulness, which is really helpful in seeking out what we need to succeed in new or challenging situations. However, we also need to remember that we are not expected to ‘go it alone,’ and that there are lots of experiences and help on offer. We just need to make the effort to ‘look and ask’.
A lot of us start university ‘feeling different’ to other people. The positive strength of this attitude is preserving our sense of individuality. However, it is also important to remember that we are joining a new community – a mix of people who are probably more similar to us than we would first be aware. If we find out about others and make connections with like-minded people uni will be a lot more interesting and fun. Someone has to make the first step.
